Two days ago, a woman who's yard is very wooded and brushy, found 3 cougar kittens about 4 weeks old in her yard in a nest that the Mother had made. She called The proper authorities who took the kittens away.
The News picked up on it and followed the story, and reported on all networks that the Fish and Wildlife officials had determined that the kittens could not be rehabilitated and would have to be euthanized!!
My mouth flew open and I was ready to go splash paint on the door of the State Officials that were stoooopid enough to decide such a thing. These kittens wer all over the news and people from every where were offering to take them but they would not rehab them.
Today was to have been the day the dirty deed was done, and right at the last minute a private wildlife sancuary in Arlington, Wa has offered to take and rehabilitate the kittens. THey are being hand fed and are DARLING! I would have taken one for awhile, but.....
THe people that are taking them said that they have great success rehabilitating and returning all sorts of wildlife to the wild. They have not ever rehabed cougars though. So they are going to be given the chance, and if they can not be returned to the wild, they will be found homes in zoos through out the country, and used for gene pool.
WHEW!!! That is so much better to me than just randomly destroying an animal just because they were mother-less and could not be returned to the wild. After all it was Man that encroached on their habitat and Man should be ashamed of his self!
When the rural areas go farther and farther into wild country, these encounters will be more common place. Laws need to be established to protect the wildlife, Man can fend for him self.
