Fall...

It has turned the corner from Summer into Fall. Maybe not on the calendar yet, but definitely in the air! The trees are already turning colors, and leaves are falling. The apples are red and laying on the ground, the deer are sporting gorgeous racks, and the fawns are wandering away from Mom. The Blackberries still are not ripe yet, and those that are, are not as sweet as they should have been three weeks ago. Tomato plants are blossoming, but no tomatoes, and at this time, they will not form. The night air is brisk and biting. I think we can say that the summer we have been waiting for is not going to show up. We have had one or two weeks of warm weather, but for the most part, it has gone from a wet cold spring right into a wet cold summer, and now a dry cold fall.

As I was coming home from the playhouse last night, the sun was just setting, and in the few seconds it took me to pull the car over and get out my camera, the sky had changed from orange/pink to purple/mauve. The moon was turning a reddish orange through the forest fire smoke on the Olympic Peninsula. It was still Pretty! I LOVE fall. I love snuggling under the covers at night, all warm and cozy with my nose poking out and breathing the cold night air. It smells so good.

The other morning at 400 I woke up and looked out the window right at ORION, my favorite constellation. When it shows up completely in our sky, we know that Fall is here, and Winter is not far behind. I expect a fairly early frost.

As much as I love the long days of summer...our days run from 345AM until 1045 PM ...I welcome the fresh air of Fall and look forward to Winter.

We pay a hefty price for living further south, our summer days are quite a bit shorter. Keep taking those photos Miz Mary lou, they're so lovely!

Yes, Yes! I can't wait until the calendar says fall. Three tomatoes here, no more for this year. Good thing I didn't plant peppers or something that loved the heat (which mercifully, we didn't have much of).

Autumn. Bring it!

I have had 4 ripe tomatoes so far and two more almost ripe. Alot of green ons. I might have to pull the plants and hang them somewhere upside down. Any room in your garage?

It's definately autumn here too. But we seem to have skipped summer. A lovely photo of the end of the day.

That's really interesting... Here I am in northern Maine - and further north than you are - but fall hasn't fell yet.

My blueberries are ripening almost faster than I can keep up, but we don't have many apples this year. The nights are getting cooler, but no frost to start the leaves turning.

According to the Farmer's Almanac we are supposed to have a dryer than normal autumn and another record-breaking winter. Meh.

I noticed, too, that fall seemed to have moved in several weeks ago. There's a change in the feel of the air, and the colors in the landscape. The annuals stopped growing and started to settle for the status quo. Hot afternoons give way to very cool evenings and nights. And then September and the change is no longer subtle. It's bold and strong. Summer is over!

I LOVE Fall also! Our mornings and evenings are cool, but it's still summer here. Never as hot as the deep South, thank goodness.

That is a stunning photo! Gorgeous!

Fall seems to be heading in early this year here as well. Last year it was very late!
You've written a lovely picture in the mind to go with the beautiful photo you took, Mary Lou!

Just keep writing for us, ML! And taking terrific photos to surprise us with!

You asked about Gov. Palin -- and I haven't read any of the comments you received. Still, taking the chance here to tell you her new name: Caribou Barbie!

I like your photo. The weather has started to feel almost fall like and like you said, we really didn't have very much of a summer. We do have tomatoes but the zucchini are still pretty small and one plant is still flowering! It is like the growing season was all screwed up. There is a local outlet for apples that is now selling them. I didn't stop but we kind of expect them to be smaller than they usually are.

Now what will winter bring us?

Beautiful picture and I see fall here also as the bushes are starting to turn color, the apples are dropping for the sheep to eat, the blackberries are at the end of their season. I am not fond of fall because it means winter is coming but it is a beautiful season. Change is in the air
